John Sands is a desperate man who needs a bribe. He gets his chance when an escaped convict, Jim Maitland, offers him a million dollars to help him evade the police. Sands agrees, and the two men go on the run. Along the way, they develop a strange friendship. Eventually, the police corner them in a warehouse, and Maitland is killed. Sands escapes with the million dollars, but he is haunted by the memory of Maitland.
