Association copy dedicated to the recipient who attended the home of the author for a private dinner to mark the publication of the book (at David Cornwell's home at Tregiffian Cottage, St Buryan, Cornwall). Accompanying the book is a dinner menu from the same event (place labelled 'Brian Goulthorp' who was a representative of the publisher Hodder & Stoughton). The inscription reads: 'For Wendy, with / all good things - / John le Carre / 27 Sep '96 / Cornwall'.
